Steven Allan Spielberg is one of the most revered and influential film personalities in the history of Hollywood.  He is one of the wealthiest and most popular directors in Hollywood. It is said that he is one of the founding members of the New Hollywood era.

    Steven Spielberg was born on 18 December 1946 in Cincinnati, Ohio. His mother's name was Leah, a restaurateur and concert pianist and his father's name was  Arnold Spielberg, an electrical engineer. He grew up in an Orthodox Jewish family. The entire family of Spielberg had to move Haddon Township, New Jersey when his father took a job with RCA in 1950. After 3 years, the family moved to Phoenix, Arizona. where Spielberg was a student of the known Rabbi Albert L. Lewis, in Hebrew school, between 1953 and 1957.

Early life

As a child, Spielberg faced embarrassment because they were Orthodox Jews. He also suffered from acts of anti-Semitic prejudice and bullying. He made his first home movie when he was 12 years old. The movie was about a train wreck when he filmed with his toy, Lionel trains. 

  He became a Boy Scout in 1958 and won the photograph merit badge after making a 9-minute 8mm film, which he titled The Last Gunfight. At age 13, he won a prize for a 40-minute war film he titled Escape to Nowhere with his high school friends. 

  At 16 years of age, he made a sci-fi adventure film called ‘Firelight’ on a $500 budget. He joined Universal Studios as a seven-day-week unpaid intern after being unsuccessful at the University of Southern California. He got an opportunity to make a 26-minute short film called 'Amblin' in 1968 which was liked by the Top management at Universal Studios. Later he directed a segment for the first episode of television series ‘Night Gallery’.

Early career

He made his debut film ‘Sugarland Express’. In 1975, he directed a film called Jaws which was a blockbuster hit collecting more than $450 mn at the worldwide box office. Later he directed ‘Indiana Jones: Raiders of the Lost Ark’ with his close friend. Again this film made more than $380 million and made him one of the elite directors in Hollywood.
